SPEAKER_01 0:32

Hey everyone, welcome to the show. I'm Daphne.

SPEAKER_04 0:36

And I'm Pake.

SPEAKER_01 0:37

And this is the Run for Your Lives Podcast.

SPEAKER_04 0:40

This episode, we're finally getting to it to kick off season 11 with the apocalyptic horror film 28 Years Later, directed by Danny Boyle and released June 20th, 2025. Yes, it took us a little bit to get there, but we're here. We're coming full circle. We're getting to it. We you know, we've done the other ones, we've talked about how excited we were for these. So we're getting to 28 years. And uh what better way to kick off this season and talk about this movie than with one of our favorite people in the podcast universe around us, as I like to say, um, who I have actually had a conversation about this movie with like a year and a half ago or something. Uh so I'm I'm really excited to do that again. Uh, so you you know her from uh The Bear podcast and the Walking Dead cast and all kinds of other great podcastica stuff. Uh Dr. Lucy Henney, welcome.

SPEAKER_00 1:39

Yay! I'm so glad to be here. Yeah, thank you for having me.

SPEAKER_01 1:45

I think this is your second time on the show because we did the crossover Anna in the apocalypse for a Christmas episode like a couple of years ago.

SPEAKER_00 1:56

I was thinking about that the other day because I was cooking fish or like dealing with tuna, and all I could think about was that song from Anna in the Apocalypse that's like inexplicably in it where the guys are dressed up as fish. And it was like, I'm like fish mother flipper. So I was singing that to myself while I was making the tuna sandwich. It was great.

SPEAKER_02 2:18

I was like, I'm gonna think Daphne were here.

SPEAKER_01 2:21

Oh I feel like we need to take a road trip pick. We need to, you know, much like Buffalo, Buffalo, where we record in a different city every week. Maybe we should just fly over and visit the.

SPEAKER_04 2:33

Yeah, I was gonna say he's in road trip at first.

SPEAKER_00 2:35

It's like uh it might be hard to get there to just music roads, but hey, Daryl Dixon managed it, so you guys can manage it. Oh my gosh. It might take 28 years, but yeah. Yeah, oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_01 2:52

Yeah, I'm really excited to talk about this one. I think, you know, as we mentioned a little bit, it came out like mid last year, so it was like almost a year ago. By the time this comes out, it'll be close to a year. And I feel like it's a movie that we were waiting so long for, but we never really knew if we were gonna get it. It was just, I wonder if they're ever gonna do something with that because the original movie really kind of jumpstarted this fast moving, infected Palooza that we've seen over the last like 23 years. I think it's been 23 years. And you just have to wonder how things evolved. You know, what does it what does that world even look like now? And thankfully, Alex Garland, Danny Boyle came back together to give us this one so that we could get a glimpse into that world. Yeah. End of podcast.

SPEAKER_04 4:01

So now that we've yeah, thoroughly covered that, everything we need to say about this movie.

unknown 4:06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04 4:08

You've got it all now.

SPEAKER_01 4:10

Yep. Um, so we'll kick it off the way we always do with some production notes. It was filmed in the holy island of Lindisfarne, Cheddar Gorge, and Newcastle upon Tyne in England. It is the first film in the new trilogy by the creators of Twenty-Eight Days Later, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland. Was nominated for a BAFTA for Outstanding British Film, did not get any love from the Oscars, and I'm still a little perplexed.

SPEAKER_04 4:47

Yeah. Rewatching it this however many time for this was yeah, I'm there's so many things. I was like, the visual effects, the cinematography, the score.

SPEAKER_01 4:59

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04 4:59

A lot of the acting. I was like, how did this get overlooked?

SPEAKER_01 5:04

I don't know. They they weren't looking at the same things that we were, I guess.

unknown 5:09

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 5:10

So the budget for this one was 60 million. It grossed 151.3 million at the box office. It's 115 minutes long. Paik, give us a synopsis. I don't think this is the one from IMDB.

SPEAKER_04 5:26

It's not. I didn't like that one.

SPEAKER_01 5:27

I didn't like it either. When I was looking up some stuff earlier, I'm thinking he's not gonna pick that.

SPEAKER_04 5:33

No, so I kind of went with uh something more near and dear to Lucy's heart, and this one kind of comes from this one comes from Wikipedia. Um represent uh Yeah, a boy living in a post-apocalyptic world undertakes a hazardous journey with his ill mother in an effort to obtain medical treatment for her.

SPEAKER_01 5:52

I like that. Amazing. I like that. It's not what they slam us in the face with at the very beginning of the movie, but it becomes that. And I think it it represents the heart of the story really, really well.

SPEAKER_04 6:06

Yes.

SPEAKER_01 6:07

And I know that you're gonna say something about the way that I had the characters listed because the main character really is Spike, not Jamie. But I don't always get to get in the document and reorder things. So I'm bringing it up before you can.

SPEAKER_04 6:24

Okay. Yeah, uh we're gonna cover this week. Um, usually when we have a guest, we kind of go like by points and things like that. But as I mentioned like last year, uh me and Lucy and Jason and Karen over on uh I think it was on the Deadcast feed or Cast of Us feed. Uh yeah, had covered this movie like days after it released in theaters, and so we kind of broke that down by a lot of our favorite points and topics on that. So Lucy and I have had that discussion. Um we will do it in more run for your lives uh fashion of kind of breaking it down character by character character arcs and and looking at it that way and just having our you know free-flow discussions that way. Although still, when doing my notes for that, it's still like 75 to 80% spike, and then I've just got a few other notes about some other things.

SPEAKER_01 7:21

But I think that works well though, because there have been movies, especially last season, that it was more of on it was more of an ensemble cast and not like one by one. And so so much of this movie is Spike. I mean, he is the heart of it, really truly. And so I I think it's fine for so many of your notes to be Spike, because so many of mine are.

SPEAKER_00 7:50

Yeah. I also think this film is such a good one to talk about in terms of character. Yeah. Like it's such a character-driven film, it's so rich with character development, and it's just I can't wait to get into it because I think it's just rich with moments and development and things that just make it such a pleasure to watch and rewatch and revisit. Yes.

SPEAKER_01 8:15

Agreed. So before we jump completely in, there were a couple things I wanted to say. One, I remember people when they saw this movie, a lot of comments online were about the amount of male appendages that were available for view in this movie. Um, that was one thing. Um and then there were people that were a little disappointed because they said it didn't feel like the first movie in the way that they wanted it to. And while I think I feel like I feel like it's different, but in watching it again, there were little things throughout that no, this is absolutely connected to the first one. Absolutely has similar things that connect it. But it's not we're not going to get Jim's story because this isn't Jim's story, this is Spike's story.

SPEAKER_04 9:17

I feel like it is very similar, though. Like there's some more fantastical elements, there's some newer ideas that are uh imposed in this, as it's a lot further into the uh apocalypse, and there's different things you can explore. But it it I guess at the end of the day, if you boil it down, it's kind of a fish out of water story as you have a regular guy who wakes up from a coma and now the world is in some kind of rage virus apocalypse, and he's having to learn what that world around him is while dealing with other people who have their own ulterior motives and kind of realizing that not everybody is as helpful as they seem. It's kind of the same thing. It's like, yeah, Spike was born and lived in this apocalypse, but he's lived most of his life on this isolated island that's pretty well secured and safe. So we're also seeing this fish out of water, and it's also kind of a coming-of-age story for him.

SPEAKER_00 10:05

Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's very much a like buildings roman, isn't it? It's like the the growth of this boy into a man over the course of this film.

SPEAKER_04 10:13

And and he's learning about the world around him that he was not really sure what it was and having to figure it out as he goes. It's it is a very similar movie in that way.

SPEAKER_01 10:24

It's about life. It's about growing and adapting to the world that you're in. And even to the point of Eric and the things that he was saying to him, realizing that his little island world and then even this bigger mainland is just a piece. There's so much more out there where things are what we would consider much more normal compared to what they're going through here, which is a community and a and a country that's just basically been isolated and blocked off like it doesn't exist anymore.

SPEAKER_00 10:58

Yeah. But then beautifully, it's also about death, which I think is brilliant. It's it's about how to live life and also how to how to die in a way and how to deal with the the specter of death that hangs over you, and and it I didn't expect, I think, when I first watched this film for it to be as emotionally rewarding as it is at the end. Like it's just such in many ways, such a lovely, nice film. Like we were talking about it in the car, uh, because Peter was like, What are you gonna say about the film? And I was like, you know, lots of different things on my mind. And one of the things he said that stuck out to me was like, all these things that on paper should be horrifying actually become these amazing acts of love in the film, like getting handed your dead mother's skull should be awful, but it's actually this really beautiful moment of like catharsis and freeing and deep emotion. Um, and yeah, I guess that's something I don't know if this is a good segue into Jamie, but that's something that Jamie doesn't see or doesn't let himself see in the world, is beneath that surface level of what things look like, how they actually are.

SPEAKER_01 12:09

Yeah. I wondered if he, with his wife's illness, even wanted to know what it was. I feel like in some ways he was just waiting for whatever was going to happen and not really thinking beyond that because he was trying to raise a son and with a sick wife, and it you could tell that it drained him a lot, and he didn't have a lot of outlets.

SPEAKER_04 12:37

Yeah. Since you had Jamie at the top of the dock, and I actually don't have any specific notes about just him, because everything I have with him really is tied in with his interactions with Spike. So just off the dome, I'll just uh, you know, free-flow here. Uh, but thoughts on that as you're talking about that, as I think what I notice about his character is that it's I don't know if it's denial, it could be, to some degree, but yeah, it's just he does kind of personify that I don't want to face it. So I think that might be a reason he takes Spike out earlier than he's supposed to. Spike is younger than he's supposed to be when he goes on this journey.

SPEAKER_01 13:18

Absolutely.

SPEAKER_04 13:19

And I think he's just like, we just need to get away. We need to do something else, move forward, uh, where you can tell that he kind of he goes out and he drinks a lot, and he's just kind of very he's looking for all of these outlets to not deal with what's going on at home. And it's everything that he can do to do that. And I think that there's a lot of subtleties that Spike is picking up on that I think Jamie's not even meaning to put out there, but there's all these things where he just he seems to be distancing himself from pain and life and death and all of these things to where it's just like all of its whatever. So this is in my notes, but it's an important moment. There's a little line that I don't think he has any intention of meaning it the way that I think Spike picks up on it. It's a very subtle. This movie does a great job of like subtle things that if you miss it, you missed it. Because they're not gonna like speak, you know, they're not gonna explain it or go back, you know, cover it again. But whenever they are the the the infected that's hanging upside down that Jimmy had had hung up and then had left to die there. And when Jamie is instructing Spike kill it, you know, it's it's not a human, basically, is like because the infection got to its brain and it's lost its mind. And when you've lost your mind, you you know, you don't have no mind, you have no soul. Oh. And what Spike has been dealing with is his mother going through these fits and episodes of in and out of lucidity and losing her mind. And it starts I think that's what really starts this train of of Spike focusing in on this like, do you even care about her anymore? Do you even love her? Do you even view her as anything that you want to save, or are you just ready for her to die?

SPEAKER_00 14:54

Yeah. Yeah. I think he like Yeah, I think that's super on the nose. And the line that broke my heart, I think, was when his mum says to him, when Isla says to Spike at the Bone Temple, I thought someone else would tell you. I was just like, Oh, someone should have told this kid, but no one no one did. Yeah. And that's so neglectful, and that's cost him this innocence of of hope. And Peter described it as the story is about a boy who goes looking for a wizard, like to cure something, like it's a quest narrative, and yeah. I think the thing we we came to with Jamie, because I I find Jamie a fascinating character because I think he's actually quite a good dad. Like, I think there's a lot that he does in this where actually he clearly loves his son a lot and does his best by him. And there's a couple of moments where I'm like, wow, for a portrayal of like masculine strength, inverted commas, you're actually doing quite a good job of being quite emotionally in tune with your son. But he's not honest, he's not an honest man, he's not honest with himself. I don't think he sets out to like be duplicitous, but you see a range of behaviours where it's a slippery slope with lying, whether it's I mean, the worst one is probably of course being unfaithful. But even then, I would argue it's obviously not a good thing to do. I'm not endorsing it, but the pressure of having essentially lost your partner, they've become someone completely different. That's very isolating. Um he exaggerates when he talks about what Spike did, but again, that's through this kind of bravado and male pride. Is anyone hurt by that lie? You know, is it a white lie? It's there's lots of instances where he could be more honest than he is, but there are a few instances where I think he lies for an evil reason. I think it's all from all the wrong action coming from a place that is not a malicious place. And I think Aaron Taylor Johnson is one of those actors. I'm sure I said this to you before, Peg, but like I always forget how good he is. I never seek out a film because he's in it. I'm never like, oh, it's an Aaron TJ film, I'll go and see it. I'm always just like, oh whatever. Then I watch him on the screen and I'm like, this guy's brilliant. He's so good. Why don't I watch more things with Aaron Taylor Johnson in them? And then the cycle repeats.

SPEAKER_04 17:18

It is funny because it's very similar. Because I mean, obviously, like probably like a lot of people, my first like my introduction to him was kick-ass. Kick ass. And to see, you know, it's very different, you know, where the trajectory he's gone on since then. But then yeah, he's done like I still haven't watched Craven, and like there's always these kind of like kind of blockbuster-y movies that are just like, you know, whatever. But then yeah, when you stumble across him doing something like this, or even the the role he played in Osferatu, as like small as it was.

SPEAKER_00 17:45

Yeah, God he's so good though. Yeah, he was so great in that film, by the way.

SPEAKER_04 17:51

Loved it.

SPEAKER_00 17:52

I was thinking about it because of him. I was like, oh yeah.

SPEAKER_01 17:57

Yeah, I have to agree. I don't think that he lies to Spike to it's not malicious. He really, I think some of it is I don't think he wanted to admit it to himself.

SPEAKER_00 18:12

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 18:13

And because of that, he really didn't feel like he could have the conversation because Spike, at his age, is at the age, the pre-teenage age, where they're gonna be asking questions, like they're gonna wanna know. And I don't think he felt probably like he was gonna be able to answer those questions.

SPEAKER_04 18:34

Yeah. If he would have been better at communication and honesty, this whole movie would never have happened.

SPEAKER_01 18:39

Right. Yeah. It's part of character, it's part of the story.

SPEAKER_04 18:43

Be because like honestly, I feel like that's what drives Spike to the point that he is. It's because of the things that he picks up on on this like distance and the things that his father says that makes him go, like, well, he doesn't give a shit about mom anymore, so it's up to me to step up and be the man and do it. Yep. And then I think it's when he's telling those tall tales at the party, was like, and he did this, and he d and he's like, I missed all those shots. He's like, no, he's building him up to be the giant killer.

SPEAKER_02 19:09

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04 19:09

When really he's like, I was scared the whole time. I was pissing myself, and it was just a horrible traumatic moment. And it kind of pushes him to be like, well, now people are gonna want to see me this way, or my dad's built me up to be this way, and I don't feel that way. I feel like I was just a scared little child. So now I have to take mom out there to the mainland on my own and prove that I'm capable the way that he wants to see me.

SPEAKER_00 19:33

Yeah. What I loved as well was two things. One is how gentle with him Jamie is in the attic when Spike apologizes. I thought to me that's the mark of his like character, because there's so many shows where you could watch that and the dad's gonna be an asshole and be like, Yeah, you should be sorry, or something, you know, just be like, Yeah, well. Whereas he actually really holds space for him in that moment and he's like, You don't have to be sorry, you did well. Um, and I'd forgotten how much he actually teaches him about standing your ground, turn round, defend, run again, turn round, defend, and you see him do that when he's on his journey with his mum. Yeah, so it does stick, like he does learn something, he does take it. And if we may speculate into the future, I am I'm interested to what this means for the kind of if there will be an arc with Jim from 28 Days, because the logical arc would be Spike goes out and finds the father he never had, and it's a whole thing, but that doesn't sit with me for this because it's not like he has a terrible dad who he needs to get away. Like I'm quite intrigued to see how that plays out. Um, and I was sad that we didn't get any Jamie in the second film. Um I did feel that like this guy would burn the woods to the ground to find his son, like, yeah, I don't know. I don't know.

SPEAKER_01 20:58

Given what we saw at the end of the movie, the way he ran into the water, the high tide, knowing the current could drag him off, he wanted to will himself across that causeway so that he could go and find his son. I mean, you could just see the angst and the frustration and the fear in him in that moment as he runs across.

SPEAKER_00 21:23

I did laugh a little bit at the baby being called Isla because part of me was like, isn't Jamie just gonna be like, Am I married to a baby now? Is that my wife? Benjamin Button, my wife? Kelsa! Kelsa! I'm so confused. He is insane. How did he do it? Reinhards. Spike's like, enjoy having an affair with a newborn. Like, that's gonna ruin your night. Like, oh my god. It just really made me laugh. Um but yeah, I I the other thing I wondered, and this is complete conjecture on my part is I think. Think the Jimmies are known to the people on Lindisfarne. I don't think they know them in depth. I don't think they know the truth of what they do. But Spike's dad was not surprised to see Jimmy carved into that body. So I think they're I can totally understand why you wouldn't tell Spike about them. Um but he does say they're weird, weird people out there, and I'm like, ah so like that makes sense because then I was like, well, why wouldn't the Jimmies have come to Lindisfarne? And I'm like, well, what we learn in the second film, they're not stupid enough to try and take over a whole well-protected fortified island. But I just wondered in the back of my head, I was like, he just doesn't seem shocked by this in the way that you might expect. So yeah, I think Jimmy's legend is maybe a bit further spread than we're led to believe on first watch.

SPEAKER_04 22:50

Yeah, there's a lot that I I want to try to separate a little bit and not go like no no major spoilers or talking about Bone Temple too much, just because we will get to that movie. Uh but you know, hopefully people have watched that by this point too, uh, who are fans of this and wanted to listen to that. But but in case not. Um but yeah, but there's definitely things that like we'll kind of maybe hint at a little bit without like giving away too much stuff. But but yeah, um so I guess we gotta just really break into we've we've talked about a lot of stuff already, but really breaking down Spike and his arc and kind of everything he goes through. Uh yeah, and as we learned, gonna give some back, you know, ground, is after the events of all the previous movies that the infected have been contained to the British mainland. So as an island, it's the infected world. And those who live there are just having to deal with the infected as the new normal. There are other countries that monitor and make sure that everyone stays there. They do these like quarantine runs.

SPEAKER_02 23:50

Yep.

SPEAKER_04 23:51

Uh, and then as we see with Eric, you know, if anyone somehow ends up on there, then they can never leave. It's a permanent quarantine in perpetuity. Like the the British mainland has just become like that's the infected place, and we just ignore that, and uh that's we just let that happen there. Uh, and the rest of the world carries on.

SPEAKER_00 24:09

Yep. I mean, it's not too far off. What can I say? It's not amazing here.

SPEAKER_01 24:20

It sounds like things have continued, business as usual, everywhere else, you know, with delivery drivers and cell phones and all of that have just continued while things have gone much more primitive.

SPEAKER_00 24:36

It's a fascinating juxtaposition, right? Like it there's iPhones.

SPEAKER_04 24:41

Like, what the fuck?

SPEAKER_00 24:42

Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04 24:44

It is that we get that little moment of, oh, the world has just picked back up and moved on. Uh yeah, so we meet Spike. I do I love this kid so much. Like, he easily may be one of my favorite movie characters in recent history, uh, especially with this movie. Again, no like spoilers for Bone Temple, that's not really his movie, though.

SPEAKER_03 25:03

I think he's in it.

SPEAKER_04 25:04

I don't think it's his movie. There's much more big focus is this is his movie, and it's so good. And what we'll get to a lot of that. Uh we did talk about it, so I'll get that part out of the way, I guess, is because we talked about it when we did it on um Cast of Us or whatever. My personal connection to that, and I've probably talked about it on this podcast in some degree in the five years, five and a half years we've done it. But I think why I gravitate towards Spike so much uh is I lost my mother to cancer when I was eleven. Or actually, like the week or two before I turned twelve. So very much in the exact same age of of Spike here. So this entire arc with his mother and you know eventually leading to him accepting her death, it was very familiar and cathartic to me. I just really latch on to him as a character. The scene of him climbing the skull tower to give her that perfect final resting place. It just one of the most emotionally impactful moments for me, in like the best way. It's always a very good cry. Every time I watch this movie, it's just like so emotional. Yeah, it's so good. Uh like you think it'd be like, oh, it should be it would be a hard watch, but no, it's like as you said earlier, Lucy, it's it is beautiful in like a weird kind of yes, it's macabre, it's death, and it's bones and skulls and memento mori, but it's so beautiful at the same time. It really is.

SPEAKER_01 26:37

I felt like it was a ceremony, like him taking that skull to the top. It was like a r not a rite of passage, but just some sort of celebration of her life in a very subtle, quiet way.

SPEAKER_04 26:53

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 26:53

And giving her the best spot, which is what the doctor told him to do, like put her in the best spot, and he, of course, took her to the top, and I just thought it was poignant and beautiful.

SPEAKER_00 27:08

Yeah. Yeah, I think it really is. It's it's yeah, it just kind of hits it hits different after a loss. I think it hits different after this kind of I don't know. It it those moments where you're thinking about life and death and getting to pick the way you want to go. You know, there are many deaths and you know, this is a good one. And it's just oh god, I got really emotional watching it again. I was like, Why am I watching that? And I'm like, oh, it's so I can talk to Daphne and Pake about it, so it's worth it.

SPEAKER_04 27:41

But also, oh no no, the feelings like I I'm a big softy though, so sometimes I love to just dive into the feelings. So it's the same way where like I'm like I'm looking forward to it. I'm like, oh I can't wait to watch this movie again, so that I can get to that end and I am destroyed. Like I need it.

SPEAKER_01 27:57

Sometimes if you feel like you need to get in touch with your feelings because of other stuff that's going on, and you can't really connect the way you want to, go if you go back and watch something like this, or a movie that's gonna pull you into that space and help you process and get to that point, then sometimes facing it is the best thing to do. Just dive in and and do it that way. I thought the whole piece, and here we are, we're really kind of t talking about the end. The whole part, right from the moment that he drugs Spike and Spike sits down, to me, from there till the time Spike puts her skull on top, is just like one like one ceremony and tribute for his mother. Even the part where she's walking down toward Kelson because he's gonna release her from this earth, basically. It all just to me was almost tranquil in the way that it just was calm and careful, and the interactions that she had with Spike just before it were just so beautiful that it you can't help but get emotional or at least feel impacted by watching it.

SPEAKER_04 29:26

Yeah. It's funny, because I I have notes throughout the whole movie, like in order, but like I'm like, I've gotta skip ahead because we're talking about this stuff now.

SPEAKER_01 29:33

So yeah, we have to.

SPEAKER_04 29:35

It's that moment it's it's wild though. Like you really see the change, and I don't know if it's just like the way it's filmed. I I mean there's definitely a lot of props I'm gonna give to Alfie Williams in that role playing uh Spike, but then I mean, and then Jodie Comer and Ray Fiennes carry so much of that weight and like really lift that up too. But like throughout the movie, you see Spike has this air of an adolescent who is reaching maturity in many ways through the movie, but yet this moment where he's sitting there with Kelson and he is told, Your mother's going to die soon, there is no cure, nothing's gonna work. I truly see him in that scene, in that moment, as just this scared and helpless little boy that he is right there.

SPEAKER_00 30:19

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04 30:20

He almost looks younger than he's looked the whole movie in that scene. He's just and maybe it's because of Ray finds, you know, Kelson towering over him, and it's just He just looks like a little child. And you just see him scared and and helpless, like I said, and then yeah, that's that's where his young age is really like shining through there. And I'm all I can think is just like somebody who like works with kids around like this kind of age range and some that like have trauma like trauma and and stuff. I just wanna I just want to hug him. Just give him a hug. He just needs a hug. Uh but I see me in him in that moment too. Like there's a lot of like I mentioned with like what I've you know went through at that age, uh, and watching him like go through the stages of grief pretty quickly. Uh, you know, from like the I don't understand what are you telling me? Like, we came all this way, and you s you're saying you can't help her, to the bargaining of like, just tell me I you know, I'll go into the town and I'll go look at the hospitals and what medicine, the old medicine, tell me what I need to get, and I'll get it, and I'll bring it to you, and uh all of this stuff to just like no, this can't be happening. What are you telling? It's like we came all this way, and it's not and then he's mad about it, and he's just like, you see him go through all these steps all the way to acceptance that you know this is what's happened, and that closure of placing the skull, and like I said, it wrecks me in the best way every time. Uh it's so good.

SPEAKER_00 31:37

Yeah. And he is, of course, a teen dad by the end of it as well. I was like, he goes through his hiring experience, and it's like, by the way, you have a kid now, and he's like, Oh, what you go. That sounds like a Jamie problem. We're gonna take a little detour back to back home real quick. Sneak in the we're gonna sneak back to the island, ditch this, and then uh carry on our way. But it's it's and I think the thing that I love about the scene um with Isla and Kelson and Spike is the honesty of it. Like, Isla, it's like a weight's been lifted from her because she finally has confirmation. Like, she's been being gaslit by her own mind, but also by the people around her who don't have the capacity to tell her the truth or to speculate. And I mean, without diagnostic equipment, I can sympathize with that. You don't want to be like, Yeah, I think you're probably, you know, gonna die. Um but she's she's lighter, she's almost euphoric that she's had this kind of confirmation being treated and cared for by this medical professional, and Kelson doesn't beat around the bush at all. He he's just very direct with Spike in a very kind way, and for all that Jamie's lies to protect his son or to save him from harm, here we see that honesty can also be kind, um, even if it hurts.

SPEAKER_01 33:08

Yeah. He was so careful with the way that he spoke to them about her not surviving much longer.

SPEAKER_00 33:20

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 33:22

He was direct, but he was also careful. I've I feel like he understood what needed to be done and said without even really knowing what Spike's background was at all. Like what I mean, he had very little information. And you have to imagine that Isla was in that position where being told, okay, this this is, you know, what I think it is, and this is the likely outcome. It had to have been a relief because of everything she had been through. Because we've talked about what Jamie went through, we talked about what Spike went through. What Isla herself went through, being in a bed day in and day out, basically a prisoner of her own mind.

unknown 34:12

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 34:12

Not knowing.

SPEAKER_04 34:14

You know what she says is when I'm confused, I know I'm confused.

SPEAKER_01 34:18

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04 34:18

And I'm shocked, I shock myself with the crazy things that I say, but I say them anyway.

SPEAKER_01 34:22

Yeah. Yeah. She's been a prisoner of her own mind, and to know that at some point, relatively soon, she's gonna be free of that had to be a huge relief despite knowing that she was leaving her son behind.

SPEAKER_00 34:37

It already hurts. Like, oh, that broke me.

SPEAKER_01 34:40

Like what she said to Spike before she walked to be with Dr. Kelson before her I I call it her ascension. Um she was just so sweet and kind, and I felt like she was lucid at that point when she's having those conversations with him, and I was grateful for that for Spike's sake that his mom was able to be his mom in those moments because he's gotten used to the episodes and things that she was going through, and so to have those precious moments with her before I'm sure m mean everything and will mean everything to him going forward.

SPEAKER_04 35:31

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02 35:31

I agree.

SPEAKER_04 35:33

Yeah. This is like you know, I mentioned how young you really can tell he is in that moment, but throughout a lot of the movie, it is that situation where he's gotta grow up fast, and you see him not only, you know, she calling him dad, uh, but but kind of having to like, you know, not really like be that like a father to her, but in a way, like he's taking care of her. Yes, we're going out, we're going, we're gonna go find a doctor, we're gonna get a help. And when she's having those kind of like moments where she's like lost in her brain, is being able to direct, okay, you know, like instead of getting like weirded out by the things she's saying, just being like, Okay, we'll just roll with that and we'll we'll figure out what to do. Well, I'm just gonna need you to do this. Okay, we need to run now, we're gonna go here. I'm not leaving her behind, we're gonna do this. To those moments where she's kind of who's gonna be, you know, who are you talking about? We're talking about you. Like he's just very like very matter-of-fact, where he's gotta grow up and just know, like, this is what it is. And even when like Eric is around and kind of giving her shit, it's like he's gonna stand up for her and defend her and protect her. Like, no, it's like she she can't help it. That's what she's like going through right now. That's why we're here. Yeah, that's why we're here, that's where we're going, and that's that's my mission. It's like, you want to wander off and like you know, leave us. Thanks for saving us, but if you don't want to stick around, you don't have to, because I'm this is what I'm doing.

SPEAKER_01 36:50

That's he plays along. Like he knows he has to. And I mean, what an incredibly risky, crazy thing to do. To take your mother who is prone to these episodes, knowing that he's not gonna be able to control every second of her out there and what she might do, to take her out there on his own to do this because no one else was going to, let's be real. Jamie was not gonna do this. He'd had opportunities to do this, he was never gonna do it. And Spike was incredibly brave. I think one of the things that really stood out to me is when we meet him and he's out in on the mainland for the first time and shooting the sl uh, what are the the slow slows or the slow lows?

SPEAKER_04 37:43

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 37:44

And his hand is shaking. Like you can tell, like, even though he's well trained to do this, his hand is shaking. But by the time we get through this, and after he's left um Isla, the baby, back on the island, he's much more confident and competent with the bow and arrow.

SPEAKER_00 38:05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 38:05

It's like the confidence is built up, the experience is there, he's braver, he's stronger now. And that is I think one simple way of just looking at the difference between him and the beginning and the and the end is the confidence that he gets in the maturity of going through everything that he went through in this movie.

SPEAKER_04 38:29

Yeah, because when we we first see him, you know, jump back to the beginning now, uh is yeah, it's like this day that his dad is taking him to the mainland to like get his first kills of infected that I I guess there's still a lot of lore and background to this island and this community that we don't know, that I'm very curious about.

SPEAKER_00 38:47

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04 38:48

That I hope we get uh in the future. But I guess it's some rite of passage that all young men have to take is like going to the mainland, getting their kills kind of it's this, you know, bec and going from boy to man kind of idea. Uh and as I said, he's younger than he's supposed to be while doing this, because like, you know, he's only twelve, then he's supposed to be a little bit older. It's like, but he's been preparing, his dad feels he's ready, and again, maybe the sickness and the things going on with his mom is part of that, you know, we gotta grow up fast and we're just gonna move on, and we're gonna like whatever we can do to get out and and ignore that.

SPEAKER_01 39:24

Well, you also don't have any guaranteed time. I mean, Jamie could go out to do something in a month and end up dead and not be there for his family, so he probably is looking at it to the point of okay, well, you know what? He might not be 14 or 15, but he's 12 and he's strong, and I'm gonna take him now. I may not get the opportunity to do it another time.

SPEAKER_04 39:52

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 39:52

And so it's important to do that.

SPEAKER_04 39:55

Yeah, because it is an interesting community, like it's very uh safe and secure and close-knit, but at the same time, they don't take risks. It's like, yeah, this this part of the thing, they do go out to the mainland, it is part of what they do, with an understanding that there's a strict, like, we're not going out to save anybody. If you don't come back, you don't come back. You leave at your own risk. We don't put unnecessary risk on other people. The people that take their risks, that's theirs and theirs alone. And it's it's an interesting community, and there's a lot of other things that are I feel like there's and I don't know if it's like a like sinister or if it's just like something else that's going on in that community, because we have all these weird flashes of the people in masks, and like they almost seem to be training the other younger children on the island, not just to defend themselves, but to be like soldiers. Like, there's a lot of other things that are going on that they don't dive into, but some of those flashbacks, I'm even like, is that real? Is it the past? Is it happening now? Is it Isla's like fever dreams? Like, what are because they it's very vague in a lot of ways on purpose. And I don't know, I want those answers.

SPEAKER_01 41:08

Uh that whole Boots poem. Like that's getting read. That it's it's a Rudyard Kipling poem.

SPEAKER_04 41:17

Yes, it's uh 1915 recording of actor Taylor Holmes reading this Rudyard Kipl uh Rudyard Kipling poem Boots.

SPEAKER_00 41:29

It's jarring. But it kills the actor, and his friggin' Wikipedia picture is terrifying. He has crazy eyes. Like I just like he's the kind of picture you'd expect to see. Oh my god, he does have crazy eyes. Doesn't he have murder eyes? I looked up and I was like, oh, I bet it's just some like rinky-dink old actor, and then I looked and I was like, oh no, I don't like that. Like he's scary looking. Um oh the I mean the trailer for this film was incredible. It was like a film in and of itself, and they used boots in it. And yeah, I mean my re I I find the the setup of the island really, really interesting because they they do a lot of quite like what's the word, almost like hallucinatory film making where they're interspersing images of like the First World War and also I think it's Henry V, like a filmed production of Shakespeare's Henry V, which depicts I think it's the Battle of Agincourt, which is generally perceived to be a big success, a big victory for England in particular. Um it's like the mythologizing of the country, like the going back to like a grassroots kind of English folk horror almost. And I I I loved it. I loved it even more the second time I watched it. I was like, it's so spooky. But I I I'm more satisfied on the second viewing that the island is just a bit bleak rather than there's a hidden sinister secret, but the way they shoot it puts you so ill at ease, and I think it also plays on what we've learned now from over a decade of saturation in the zombie genre that things are not always what they seem and bad things are lying under the surface. But I loved like on the wall. Um in the UK we have these kids' books called Ladybird books, and they've got a very specific style of illustration, and it's all like you know, a guide to butterflies and things like that, and they've got ladybird style pictures on the wall of like the jobs you can have in the community. Yes. And it's like Baker, soldier, hunter, like it's I was like, wow, everything gets stripped right back to the the kind of bare minimum. But they still endure and survive, and I find that really fascinating. I have to say I don't trust the guys on watch very much. They tend to be asleep whenever we see something. I think the tide would make you lazy that way though, because it's such a good natural protection. Yeah. Yeah. But that scene where they're running towards it with Samson following them under the northern lights is stunning. Like absolutely stunning. Um but I was just like, these guys should be awake. Why are they asleep? Oh my god. Even though I knew they were gonna be fine this time, I was still quite stressed out about it.

SPEAKER_04 44:35

Yeah, it's it's yeah, it's very stressful while also being a beautiful, like cinematography-wise, and just like the yeah, the stars and the northern lights and all this, like just such a weird mix. So serene if they weren't being chased by this horrific alpha monster.

SPEAKER_01 44:52

Uh and that's the cinematography, like I looked at watching it again this time thinking, how do you not put that on a list for like best cinematography? That scene alone was just beautiful.

SPEAKER_04 45:06

Well, that and then just like the creative use of filming techniques uh to give like a lot of those like kill shots while Jamie and Spike are out, and then even just like Spike later stuff where like the arrow through the head, and then it almost is like almost like Matrix bullet time where it stops and then rotates around and you see all these little angles.

SPEAKER_00 45:26

So good.

SPEAKER_04 45:26

And the way that they do that is it's like this rig of iPhones that were in a semicircle that then they could just connect all that footage together and like it's so cool. Like they they so many really cool ideas, and like the rigging shots of like while they're running from uh the alpha and the other like infected and stuff, and just the way that like you know, they zoom in and then back out and up, and there's so many great shots, uh cinematography-wise. I'm like watching this again, I'm like it should have gotten some like love for that.

SPEAKER_01 46:01

They gave us the love. We were able to get Sinners and Weapons love at the Oscars. That that's what they they could only give so much to horror, and I feel like they allocated it to Amy Madigan and Michael B. Jordan and Sinners. I I feel like they just felt like, no, we we've allocated the percentage to horror nominations. This is we're done now.

SPEAKER_00 46:30

We're done. It's like when they gave Lord of the Rings everything in the final year, they're like, what more do you want?

unknown 46:34

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04 46:36

Here's one of those things I mentioned earlier that I noticed on this watch that I hadn't noticed before because of the subtitles. Um, is while Jamie and Spike are out killing these slow los, and they take out like three of them, and then there's one left that seems to be like a child, a young child, like a little like girl or something. And Jamie is like locked on and like staring at it, and it's looking back, and then it turns and runs. There are children's voices, yes, yes, underlying in there, and then like with the subtitles, there's like a mother's voice or something, like, hurry up, come inside, go inside, let's go, we need to go, hurry up. And it's like all of these things and I was like, There's no explanation to that, but I was like, headcanon. I was like, what is happening right there? And it's like maybe it's a memory in Jamie's head, of even when he was a child, remembering something, but it's it stops him in that moment. He snaps back out of it and then just kind of moves on, like, well, that was weird anyway, never talk about or think about that ever again. Moving on, but yeah, just picking up on it this time of like there's so much about Jamie that I'm curious about now too. Like, is there if we get Aaron Taylor Johnson back in a third movie, do we get an explanation? Do we get more backstory? Do we get to understand his character more or not? I don't know.

SPEAKER_00 47:55

I mean, he must have been so I'm guessing he and Isla are supposed to be in their thirties, early to mid-thirties, and they would have been, yeah, 28 years later, they would have been kids, they would have been the same kind of age as Jimmy, who is established as a kid at the start of the film when we see him at the end of it. And you wonder what they've come through to get there, like it's pretty rough.

SPEAKER_01 48:19

Isla has that memory where she's talking about her dad and the angel, which is that big statue, or like to me, yeah, it was huge. Um, and she's talking about being six or seven and in a car. It sounded like so.

SPEAKER_00 48:38

Were they heading that way? Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 48:40

Yeah. So it sounded like that was just before it happened, or when it was the initial thing was happening.

SPEAKER_00 48:47

So I wondered if people were told to go to Lindisfarne or plan to go because um boring British geography. Uh the older guy says that Kelson practiced as a GP in Whitley Bay, which is not far from Lindisfarne, but it's not right beside each other. Um if you were living in Whitley Bay, no, if you were living in Lindisfarne, I don't know if I don't think your GP would be there. Um so I wondered if people had gradually gravitated there, if it had seemed like a logical refuge for people in an outbreak. Uh Lindisfarne is stunning. If you ever come to the UK, you can visit it. There is a causeway, but the causeway is a little road, so you can drive over. Um, all of the areas in the northeast that they mention and where they shoot things are really beautiful. It's a lovely, lovely part of the country.

SPEAKER_04 49:37

Yeah. I'd love to sometime. That would be yeah. Fantastic. Like all of those like shots. And that's another thing that's like fun to have you on here. It's just like, please, uh, boring.

SPEAKER_02 49:48

Tell us. It's not boring.

SPEAKER_04 49:50

It's like I want the the the like British geography and history and stuff that you living in that area and and knowing that stuff.

SPEAKER_00 49:58

Well, I do live, uh yeah, because I like I'm from Scotland, but I now live in Yorkshire, which is a little bit further south than uh Lindisfarne, but I used to get the train up to Edinburgh quite a lot for work, and you can see the angel, and you can also see Lindisfarne from the train from York up to Edinburgh, which is lovely. It's a really beautiful train journey to take. And yeah, the angel is very tall, and it was a very big like thing in the 90s that that got built. For some reason, like every kid who's sort of a 90s kid or millennial is like, oh yeah, the angel of the north, that was a big deal. Um, it is quite stunning. I remember when it first came up, everyone was like, Ugh, and now I'm like, no, I actually quite like it.

SPEAKER_04 50:40

Yeah, it's cool. Um Yeah, what I do like, and we mentioned this a little bit, you know, Lucy specifically, is like those great bonding moments between Jamie and Spike while they're out. It's like you really do see him that great father instinct of just like, you know, Spike's got this, like, well, I screwed up or I'm doing this wrong, and he's like, No, you're doing everything exactly right. This is what we're out here for, is to learn and figure out. And as long as you're trying, you're you're accomplishing the mission. Like, good job. And there's a lot of great stuff. Uh, we get some beautiful shots, like the the deer. He's like, they're amazing. Oh my god. They're beautiful. And then I followed up with they do move in herds.

SPEAKER_02 51:17

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04 51:22

Uh what does the fox say? Uh that sound. And it can be quite surprising if you're not ready for it. Uh, which I was, I've seen this enough times, I'm fully prepped for a fox in that moment at this point.

SPEAKER_01 51:34

You mean it doesn't go dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun. Yeah. There's a song that's what does the fox say?

SPEAKER_00 51:43

I was thinking about the meme with the deer. Have you seen it was years ago, the Fenton meme, the guy who loses his dog in a park in England. And uh, I'll send you the video, it's great. Uh if you Google it, it's it went quite viral on YouTube, but yeah, you just see all these deer thundering, and then suddenly a dog appears, and you just hear this guy going, Fenton, Fenton, oh Jesus Christ, Fenton! And then you see him run into frame and try and find his dog. So when the deer came on, we were both like, Fenton, Fenton!

SPEAKER_01 52:14

I think too. I mean, Jamie finds a frisbee at one point, and the fact that Spike doesn't know what it is. Oh. But he's talking about it like, oh, but it's fun, you know? It's like the there were little things like that that just kept reminding you of the very different life that the kids grew up in versus like what Isla and Jamie and the others did.

SPEAKER_00 52:39

Something that exists just for fun. Yeah. Must be incredible. I'd love the idea of like Jamie coming out like rocking a yo-yo or something and being like, like, I can walk the dog, and him just being like, What? What is this?

SPEAKER_03 52:53

For your next lesson, Spike, this is a Rubik's Cube.

SPEAKER_01 52:57

Yeah. Back in the day, we used to solve it nine seconds.

SPEAKER_00 53:04

Amazing.

SPEAKER_04 53:08

Yeah, it's so it's yeah, it's great just to see them out. And then there's like mixed in, of course, like you know, when they go into the house and then see Jimmy's handiwork, and and we talked about that, you know, no mind, no soul, and then it kind of brings the emotional thing down, especially on future like on multiple watches, where you're like, ooh, like, because you can see Spike like his he's got that kid brain where he's gonna like hyper focus and hyper-fixate on like little things and read into them so much and be like, well, what does that mean? What is what does everything mean, and what is your you know, motives of saying that? And I think it just kind of there's like a lot of those little things that kind of build to that lead to what happens, why he ends up kind of turning on his dad and then yelling at him and telling him to leave and taking his mom out of the the village and just and seeing that, but yeah, like the uh the alpha kind of stalking, you know, like they run into that and they manage to go back to that house and then have to just hide up there. It's kind of that, you know, I can sit I can do this all day, all night, and I will just stand here and wait for you. Yep. Which then makes me wonder after they fall asleep that herd coming through and kind of making the house collapse on itself a little bit. It's like, does that alpha direct that herd? Is it smart enough to do that somehow? Like to try to like force them back out of the house? Was that a planned action kind of thing, or just bad luck? Um I don't know.

SPEAKER_01 54:32

They're not the whisperers, Peike. Like he can't get in there and and direct them that way, but it's got a murmuration of birds that just like follows them around.

SPEAKER_04 54:44

Like, nature, the animals are very in tune with the infected in these alphas.

SPEAKER_02 54:50

Right.

SPEAKER_01 54:52

I like the way that Jamie explained like the Jimmy body, like maybe it's a punishment, maybe it's a warning. There are strange people on the mainland roaming. Yeah, that was foreshadowing of things.

SPEAKER_04 55:06

And Lucy, as you said, that like maybe then they are at least somewhat aware of the Jimmies or who I I didn't really think about. I was like, that makes sense if they are.

SPEAKER_00 55:17

I mean the Jimmies do a lot of viral marketing. Because you see it on the side of a building as well, don't you? Um like Jimmy, I don't know, he has risen or Jimmy's written his name on it, or something like that. Like, yeah.

SPEAKER_01 55:31

I mean the Jimmies made me think of like an old school martial arts movie at the end when they were jumping down to take out the infected. They they just the way that that was shot was just very old school, like I don't know, an old Bruce.

SPEAKER_04 55:48

Very Power Rangers. Yes.

SPEAKER_01 55:49

Yeah. Yeah.

unknown 55:50

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 55:51

Like that.

SPEAKER_04 55:52

Like this like heavy metal telly tubbies theme song.

SPEAKER_00 55:56

I'd forgotten about the heavy metal telly tubbies. I was like, oh Lord. Interesting.

SPEAKER_01 56:02

Uh so can I can I talk about the teletubbies? Of always. I have to tell you, okay. First of all Do they exist in America really?

SPEAKER_04 56:12

I I watched so much Teletubbies as a small child. Yes.

SPEAKER_01 56:16

Okay. Explain so much. I wonder if the Teletubbies. If that was actually more horrifying than anything else that was in this movie at all.

SPEAKER_00 56:27

Absolutely, yes.

SPEAKER_01 56:29

It honestly seemed demented. I've never really paid attention to the Teletubbies. I couldn't tell you very much about it.

SPEAKER_04 56:38

I could tell you all about Tubby Custard and what was the vet new new?

SPEAKER_00 56:46

Tubby Custard and Nunu. No, I knew it.

SPEAKER_01 56:50

I just thought this is this is so Demented, really truly. Uh right from when we see Jimmy at the very beginning of the movie, and then like the heavy, like the heavy ment metal uh Teletubby's music when they're doing that. It's just like, oh man, this is this is so messed up. I I yeah, I think it's I think it's strange.

SPEAKER_00 57:21

I believe what Daphne's saying is that Jimmy was doomed the minute you started watching Teletubby's. Yes.

SPEAKER_04 57:27

Like I said, I watched a lot. I mean, Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Lala, and Po were spent plenty of time with them as a child. And I think I turned out totally for fine and normal, right?

SPEAKER_02 57:38

Yes, I'm sure you did.

SPEAKER_01 57:40

You watched enough of other things to balance it out. Jimmy only really has teletubbies with nothing else. Plus, I mean, Jimmy saw his father convert to the new religion, which is basically being eaten or converted. I I yeah, that's what I called it. He was converted to a new religion.

SPEAKER_04 58:02

What was it? There's something I recently watched or something. I don't even remember what it was now, but Teletubbies came up, and somebody was describing it. On the in their body that they can watch, but then if you go to that TV, it's them on there, and then they see themselves on the screen inside the TV.

SPEAKER_00 58:20

It's Border Temple.

unknown 58:21

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04 58:22

But then on the screen inside there, then on that screen, it's them watching the screen, watching themselves on a screen, watching themselves on a screen add infinite item.

SPEAKER_00 58:36

Yeah, no. Oh, I love it. Yeah, it's it's it's absolutely wack-a-odle. Absolutely wack-a-doodle. Like just the idea of these these kind of ninjas coming in at the end and their points of reference or Jimmy Savile, the Telly Tubbies and the Power Rangers. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 58:54

I mean, really. And they show that to us, like that opening piece, and then it it's over. And I'm just like, well, what happened to to Jimmy?

SPEAKER_00 59:05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 59:06

We have no idea until the end of this. I'm like, oh, okay.

SPEAKER_04 59:11

I I do like watching that opening scene. I mean, as much as yeah, it's it's brutal.

unknown 59:16

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04 59:17

But it's it's this tiniest look at the trauma that creates the man that becomes Jimmy. Um because yeah, as a boy, he sees the infected slaughter his family and a bunch of other kids there. And then yeah, when he runs to his father, the priest, he's just totally on board with this whole thing as well. So like willingly lets the infected kill him, so Jimmy is able to hide out and survive that as well. And then yeah, we don't see him again until the very end of this movie in his evolved form, full Jimmy.

SPEAKER_01 59:48

Uh full Jimmy. That right there. Yes.

SPEAKER_04 59:52

Yeah, although, like I said, we we see his name and some um signs of his actions around during Spike's adventures. The opening is also very reminiscent of a scene in 28 weeks later. I immediately think of it.

SPEAKER_00 1:00:05

Interesting.

SPEAKER_04 1:00:05

Where uh they they show up to this farmhouse and there's like relative safety for a while, and they're like eating, and it's like, okay, things have calmed down. And then there's this little boy that shows up at the door and he's looking for help and he's on the run with the infected on his tail, and he brings the infected to this house, and everybody dies. Uh like brings chaos and death with him. And I was like, So it's kind of the opposite, though. It's like now the only survivor is the lone little boy instead of the boy like showing up and spelling doom for everybody. So it's kind of like a twist on that scene from 28 weeks.

SPEAKER_00 1:00:33

I was like, I am like kind of fascinated about how Jimmy survived. Yeah. Like that does really interest me. I'm like, okay. Because there's an urgency to this world that in other ones, like I don't know, The Walking Dead or whatever, we don't quite have. Like, this feels like a much less survivable world. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 1:00:52

Yeah. They're so fast. I mean, you can you you kill one, and there's ten more behind for everyone, and it just becomes amplified and bigger and crazier.

SPEAKER_00 1:01:04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 1:01:04

And you can't get away. And so yeah. Pake, it reminded me of 28 weeks later, too. Like that's that whole opening scene. Because it did, it felt very similar. Like the way they shot it too. I I felt very much like it was that vibe that we saw in that one.

SPEAKER_04 1:01:29

Yeah. Where was I on? Yeah, we've talked about a lot of uh just kind of go through my notes. Yeah, cinematography and stuff is great, the alpha stuff. Uh yeah, when they go back, they do make it back. Uh that whole Causeway scene. Yeah, it's the intense. But yeah, and then like Spike gets a little drunk at his party, um, not quite as much as his dad, uh, who's now wandered off with uh somebody else. Uh and that's what you know, where Spike kind of follows and sees that, and then he's devastated, goes straight home to his mom, and there's like more of that, just like this image and trust in his father just crumbling away piece by piece, because it's getting chipped at. And you can hear as he's talking to Sam, the older man who's like sitting at the house, kind of keeping watch of Isla and spent time with her. I was like, man, the young man of honor is not even at his party anymore, and the rest of the town does not care. They're still out there having fun.

SPEAKER_00 1:02:20

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_01 1:02:20

Spike who? Uh they were partying before he got back. They were. Yeah, I was like, huh. They're gonna celebrate and he's not back. What if he doesn't come back? You're just gonna drink and be merry anyway? Yeah. I guess.

SPEAKER_04 1:02:37

It becomes a well we we're Spike and Jamie, we remember the the very well.

SPEAKER_00 1:02:43

All right. Or the other weird conclusion is that they got everyone out of bed. So I think I believe that they recently, you know, that rather than they were all partying, they were all like, oh, Spike's back, everyone wake up, we're having a party. But I think you're right. I think they just started the party. Yeah. Because, like, why not?

SPEAKER_03 1:02:58

If they show up, they show up.

SPEAKER_01 1:03:00

Yeah, we're just gonna, you know, move on because it seems like they've had to move on before, which is why they have these strict rules about things. Yeah. Where you don't go after people or whatever, because they've lost too many people in rescue missions.

SPEAKER_04 1:03:19

Yeah. While they were still up in that attic, we you know, there's the fire and Spike noticing that and you know, seeing Kelson's fire and asking his dad about that. And that's another thing, like Lucy, what you said is like these little like these lies that he realizes his dad's telling him. He was like, I've never been there. I don't know what that is. And it's like, and then speaking to Sam again that night, and him telling him the story of Dr. Kelson, an actual doctor, you know, and he's like, Why wouldn't somebody say something to me? And then learning his dad went out there and saw him and knew he was out there and knew who he was, and he's like, Well, he told me he hadn't been there, and he said there's no doctors. Like, he's actively been lying to me. And it's just these more of these like little pieces. He's just like, he just doesn't care about mom. He's gonna just He could have done something about it, and he's actively just lied and ignored it and not done anything. So that's where he's like, I guess I'm gonna have to be the one that steps up and takes charge because dad's not gonna do it.

SPEAKER_00 1:04:20

And then you see it also from Jamie's perspective of he saw something really fucking creepy. Yeah. But then when we hear the stuff about it, we're like, oh no, that that's actually lovely. Like it was funny, and the Peter described it as um he thinks he's seeing him doing this uh this crazy ritual.

SPEAKER_01 1:04:37

Yeah, it's and he is, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00 1:04:40

But it's not crazy, like it's that thing of like it's it's what Jamie sees is true, but it's also not true, it's also not the the full picture of it, and I find that really, really interesting.

SPEAKER_01 1:04:52

But you can also understand why Jamie and his friends didn't rush to go down there when he's got all of these bodies laid out. He they didn't know how those bodies got like were laid out that way, or any of it. They didn't know that it wasn't ominous.

SPEAKER_00 1:05:11

What really surpr what really made me laugh is he's like, you know, and he's waving like he wants us to come down there for a cup of tea or something. And you're like, yeah, it's probably exactly what you want.

SPEAKER_01 1:05:19

It's probably exactly that made me think of it, the original it. And one of the kids' fathers was a ghost, or Pennywise was pretending to be one of the kids' fathers and hanging out down by the river by this big old metal thing, and he's waving, try like he's trying to get him to come over. That's what that reminded me of.

SPEAKER_02 1:05:47

I'm like, oh boy.

SPEAKER_01 1:05:49

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04 1:05:50

I just imagine he's like, Yeah, come on down. He said, Have some tea. Kettle's on. Well, that one too, but that one's for people. The other one Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 1:05:58

That one's for heads. Uh but this one's for tea.

SPEAKER_01 1:06:03

Yeah. You can understand why they didn't want to do it.

SPEAKER_00 1:06:10

Yeah, absolutely.

SPEAKER_01 1:06:11

I mean, of course you'd run the other way. You do not want to be involved in this.

SPEAKER_04 1:06:15

But yeah, but it's enough to just like build up on Spike to where finally he he does something impulsive and honestly a terrible idea in retrospect, just like but it and you know I'm glad that it winds up being something very beautiful and meaningful. But it's just a lot of this stuff where he just feels like kind of alone in this. Like he starts to get this feeling of like nobody else is going to care, nobody else is gonna do anything unless I do. So I'm going to. And you know, it it speaks a lot of the like ability and bravery that he does have. Like he's still scared, he's still overwhelmed in a lot of ways, but he's facing it because he's got a mission, he's got something that is more important and feel you know, means something more to just to him than just that.

SPEAKER_02 1:07:04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04 1:07:04

Uh he's also a very heavy sleeper, because falling asleep on that first watch was not a great start.

SPEAKER_00 1:07:10

Uh oh god, yeah, that was heavy sleeper.

SPEAKER_04 1:07:14

There's like not a single twitch from him as his mom is bashing this like things head in, like right next to him, and he's just out cold.

SPEAKER_00 1:07:21

That gave me major like Carolyn the Walking Dead waves. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 1:07:27

I liked the back and forth in the way they shot that, where he's asleep, but then you get this vision of the the slow-mo crawling up after him, and you it just kinda kept flickering. I really liked that. I thought it was cool how they showed it.

SPEAKER_00 1:07:45

That kind of feverish, like, is it real? Is it not real? What's happening?

SPEAKER_01 1:07:49

Exactly. One of the things that made me honestly crack up was, and there aren't that many moments of levity in this movie, so very few and far between. But when he looks at Eric's phone and sees his fiancee and asks what's wrong with her face, and I'm thinking, Oh, yeah, it's this new trend where young women are getting Botox in their 20s, and it doesn't age well over time.

SPEAKER_00 1:08:20

I like that and then this is your father, Spike.

SPEAKER_04 1:08:24

Yeah, uh Eric, it's it's kind of like the comedic relief.

SPEAKER_01 1:08:28

Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04 1:08:29

For a little bit of time.

SPEAKER_01 1:08:30

Briefly briefly.

SPEAKER_04 1:08:32

Not not necessarily himself, but just the conversations he and Spike have and like the the juxtaposition of like a kid who's born and raised in this world of infected and it's all he knows, versus someone from the outside world where things are quote unquote normal. And so some of the funniest dialogue just ends up in these like little moments. Is yeah, you you mentioned so that's but he's like, Yeah, so yeah, my friend was a delivery driver. You don't know what a delivery driver is. Basically, he just like people order stuff off the internet, you don't know what online is. He's like, you how do I explain things when you don't know anything? Uh yeah, the fiance thing is great. I love Spike's like direct quote. He said, He was like, Oh yeah, there's this girl in my town who has the same thing. He's like, What is it? She's allergic to shellfish, so she just gallops and her whole mouth gets dead fat and swells up.

SPEAKER_01 1:09:18

I mean, I it's real. I've seen it on TikTok. Girls, I feel so bad that they feel like they have to go to those lengths in their 20s to awful.

SPEAKER_04 1:09:31

But it's a great movie. Yeah, the who are you? I'm Eric, and this is your father, Spike.

SPEAKER_02 1:09:37

Spike.

SPEAKER_04 1:09:39

And then you know she's like, he's a dick. It's like he's just uh and it's just like, what are we doing? It's like we're going to get you a doctor. And she's like, Alright, then off we go. And then just the she can walk after he's been carrying her for like the past however long.

SPEAKER_01 1:09:55

And there were different times too where she would realize things, like especially when she realized where they were and that they it wasn't safe, that they were on the mainland when she was lucid and knew what was going on and wanted them to go back home, and Spike just kept insisting, no, we're going to the doctor. And pointing out, there's the fire, it's over there. That's the doctor. We're going, that's where we're going.

SPEAKER_00 1:10:22

And we've established early on, I loved it. There was a bit where she asks him to go to the shop to get her some neurofin, which is just Advil, and you see like the town and hear the sounds of like it what a town would sound like when it was inhabited and populated, and then you see how the town is now overgrown and silent, and oh, it was brilliant.

SPEAKER_04 1:10:42

Yeah. Some great stuff. Um kinds of like random notes. Uh yeah, um, after the incredible like Yeah, bone temple and and kind of Death of Isla scene and stuff, and you know, we can't be all happy touching peace from here because you know I gotta cut to Samson tearing in after them the next day. Um but Spike's able to self save Kelson with stabbing the sedative needle tranquilizer into uh Samson's arm and just like return the favor. That's how you know after the train scene, which I've got some thoughts about. Uh yeah. Kelson saving them with that tranquilizer. Return the favor. I love that. Uh and then yeah, we talked about Spike returning home, kinda, leaves the baby at the gates with a note, and then is just like, alright, I'm I'm out. That's your problem now. I've done that. Uh as for him, he's not ready yet. He's got more exploration to do, the world around him, and even himself, I think, of just like who he is to be in this world. I think he's got a lot of contemplation to do.

SPEAKER_01 1:11:44

Well, and his dad hasn't exactly been honest with him, and and so I think he wants to do this on his own, where he can learn on his own without someone telling him something that may or may not be true. Although with Jimmy, I I'm not sure.

SPEAKER_04 1:12:01

Right. It's like he was he was out on his own for almost a month. Uh he meets the Jimmies. Uh that's a story for another time.

SPEAKER_00 1:12:10

Yes. Perhaps a sequel or something. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 1:12:13

The Jimmies. Oh boy.

SPEAKER_04 1:12:18

Yeah. Um see Isla, if I have any more like great moments. Oh, yeah, there's just again the moment of is taking something really sweet and then it just kind of turns sour. Like where you're like, oh, and then it became is you know, that before he falls asleep on watch duty. But when they're laying there together and Isla's telling her son that like she, you know, he reminds her of his her own father. And it's like she's lucid in that moment. Like it's very like, you know, you have his eyes, you have his sense of humor, you know, does the little like, you know, crossing his eyes and goofy little face, and it's like, yeah, there he is. Like that's and it's a very sweet and cute moment, but then it creates this new thing in her brain that twists it up, and then eventually she starts actually getting him confused with her father. And it's just like, oh man, it's heartbreaking.

SPEAKER_00 1:13:10

And that scene where she's talking about the time travel aspect, and you see like a man stand behind her and put his hands on her like it's she's feeling her father's presence there. It's incredible. And I think um as much as like it's it's two different wolves, right? His dad and his mum, so like his dad is teaching him how to hunt and be ruthless and violent. Well, not ruthless, but to use violence to survive, which is necessary in that world, and he's teaching him about those aspects, but his mum is teaching him about empathy and care and setting him up for his next kind of journey. And between the two of them, they've raised a really good kid. Yeah, absolutely. I don't know if I would endorse all their methods, but Spike, you know, he has two parents who do love him very much and kind of show it in very different ways. But it's interesting to see the way they're kind of juxtaposed with one another.

unknown 1:14:08

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 1:14:09

And his mum was very against him leaving the island. Like in one of her moments, was she did not want Jamie to take him off the island. She felt he was too young.

SPEAKER_04 1:14:20

Yeah, the Angela North scene, and man, it's it's beautiful, but again, sad because you know her mind is just elsewhere completely. Like she is just not there. Uh but then yeah, the infected show up, Spike gets them running. Yeah, they wind up at that shell station where the S has appropriately fallen off the sign. Uh love that. And that's where they meet Eric. Uh which the music cues. Again, I don't I need to look like exactly what these are, but when that like benzene ignites and then like torches the infected and it's like all burning overhead while they're laying on the ground, and like whatever, like this music, this score that's playing, that's like these like weird, like it's kind of like this electronic mixed with like some classical with like these like kind of like weird vocal like loops and stuff. Like the music. I mean, Alex Garland always finds really unique music in his works, like across the board. Uh man, we've we've covered a few of uh his things, but like Annihilation has some of the like most unsettling just music cues and stuff, also, where you're like, ha! So his projects always are great with that.

SPEAKER_00 1:15:31

Do you know much about the about Young Fathers?

SPEAKER_04 1:15:35

Mm-mm.

SPEAKER_00 1:15:35

So Young Fathers are they're a Scottish hip-hop group. They're um they've been around a while, and they scored this film. Nice, okay. Um, and they are um you should listen to like we were on a trip to, ironically, an island in Scotland earlier uh this year, and one of my friends is a big Young Fathers fan, so we had them on in the car, and oh my god, they're great. And watching the film, having listened to the songs that they'd written for it and the things that they'd arranged, thoroughly recommend checking it out. Um their soundtrack is.

SPEAKER_04 1:16:06

That's the answer I was looking for. I was just like, I need to look into that. And you're like, I've got you covered, I know exactly what you need to look at. Yes.

SPEAKER_00 1:16:12

I was like, either Pake will absolutely love this already, or he has yet to discover it, so I'm glad to point you in that direction. Because that was one of my notes was Young Father's soundtrack is perfect.

SPEAKER_04 1:16:23

Yeah, I love it.

SPEAKER_01 1:16:24

It is. I think the music as a whole, all of it, beginning to end, was just perfect and impactful.

SPEAKER_04 1:16:32

So I've I forgot that Kelson makes the Alas poor Eric joke, because I made it first while watching this one, and then it comes back around and he says it and he's like, I forgot he also makes that joke, so it's a good one.

SPEAKER_00 1:16:44

I you know Per spike, all these people saying these things and then looking at him pityingly like you get it.

SPEAKER_04 1:16:52

Get some culture, kid. Uh but yeah, because uh alas, poor Eric was in my notes of uh he's not long for this world, because yeah, we get Isla wandering into the train to deliver a baby for an infected woman, and then Eric takes out the infected and wants to take out the baby, uh, and is getting quite uh belligerent about that, and then baby daddy Samson shows up to remove his skull and spine from the rest of him. So uh yeah, Eric, which is uh goodbye in Swedish, apparently.

SPEAKER_01 1:17:24

Uh and what on earth? That Samson, that's what he does, is he rips out the head and spine. I mean, that is just wow, brutal.

SPEAKER_04 1:17:34

Now, on this watch, because I think this is the first time I've seen it since after watching Bone Temple. So again, without getting too spoilery, but that birth scene was very interesting with the pregnant infected. Because it seems like she does temporarily mellow out and becomes almost human again while letting Isla help her, and like there's this emotional connection. And so getting a little bit into Bone Temple, it was a hint that like that humanity maybe still left inside them to some degree, that very deep inside. But the the chemicals that brain that the brain creates during birth. There's like a lot of like that just kind of rush of and I feel like it kind of takes over and overrides the rage virus. It's like a short time, but like this idea of brain chemistry alteration, you know, maybe that'll be explored in the future, but who knows?

SPEAKER_00 1:18:33

It's very interesting, like very interesting. It um I I'm never quite sure about the purpose of the baby in this. Um my Yeah, I'm just not quite sure about it. I'm not quite sure how I feel about it. I think that it works. Um, Peter pointed out they needed a reason to get Spike back to leave a note for his dad, and I was like, oh yeah, that makes sense. I'm like, does he mention in that that his mum died? Because otherwise, I if I was Jamie, like I say, I would be really confused. I'm like, so your mum's gone, but I guess I'm a dad again. Like, hmm. Um so I don't know, I think I like it, but I it's not my favourite part of the film. Yeah. But it does propose some interesting things about how they maintain the population and what it means to kind of give birth in that situation. It's just oh yeah, it sounded very painful. That actor did an amazing job. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04 1:19:38

Um, I guess really the last thing that I haven't really talked about, unless I've just been trucking along. If you guys have other notes, if you all have, about Spike and Isla and all of that stuff. I don't know. Tricking along. But last one I haven't really touched on is Kelson. Uh oh. Beautiful. Which, yeah, I mean, where he just kind of shows up when things seem really dire after the train. Uh Samson is on the tail of Spike and Isla, and he just shows up with the tranquilizer dart, and Samson's chill as fuck immediately. Just like, oh, uh and then yeah, where we see, and it's not named this in this movie, but we know it from the sequel and just kind of the setup is like the bone temple. Um, Kelson's shrine to the concept of Memento Mori. Remember his he says it remember death, or really remember you must die. Uh his way of honoring all those lives that ended that he's come across over time. It seems like in those early days when Jamie was younger and came across him, he was just wandering through the city and the towns, and just finding corpses and bodies and people who had died long ago, or even fresher bodies, and just collecting them and bringing them there and starting this, you know, monument and shrine to that.

SPEAKER_00 1:20:53

Yeah. He's he's such an amazing character. I think Rafe Fines gives an outstanding performance in this film. Just the empathy and the humanity and the kindness is just wonderful. Just absolutely wonderful. I I almost have nothing to say about it because I just enjoy it so much. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04 1:21:11

What really one of the moments that's so emotional. I mean, of course, that whole bit with him kind of diagnosing to the best of his ability Isla and having that conversation with her, and then that conversation with Spike and all of that we've we've talked about plenty. Um but then when he's really like explaining to Spike like the situation, and it's not just the Memento Mori, which is important, is remember, like we must die, and then as you mentioned, that you know, to have the uh uh opportunity to choose your death and that it's a good one. And then he follows it up with Memento Amoris, remember you must love, and it's absolutely fantastic, and it makes me think, I was like, I need to try to figure out like how to design like a tattoo or something around this whole scene in sequence with the bone temple and like the memento amori, memento amoris, and because it does mean that much to me. I'm like, I kind of want to see if I can figure out something.

SPEAKER_00 1:22:08

Do you have a sleeve, Pate? Could it f no? What's your setup at the moment?

SPEAKER_04 1:22:13

No, I just like if you I'm wanting to try to like build out something, but like I don't know.

SPEAKER_00 1:22:20

I'm just thinking you should get like the full temple. Yeah. Like I'm only half kidding. I'm like, No, like that's honestly a good idea. Like, yeah.

SPEAKER_01 1:22:28

I like that Kelson says to him, There are many kinds of death, and some are better than others. The best are peaceful, where we leave each other in love, and that's just before he says, Memento, Amoris. He had these just moments, like just even talking about the monument, like the sk the bone temple. He said, Every skull is a set of thoughts, these sockets saw, and these jaws spoke and swallowed. This is a monument to them, a temple. And you can tell in the delivery just how much he believes in what he's doing, that this is what he's carved out is his purpose now is to build this memorial to these people that he didn't know. They he's just come across these bodies and built this shrine.

SPEAKER_04 1:23:22

I think you know, as as a doctor in the before times, I mean his job was to try to do the best of his ability to preserve life. And now living in a world where that's just really not possible, and death has become the overriding factor. He's flipped and he's his mission is to preserve death in a way.

SPEAKER_00 1:23:43

Yeah, yeah. Oh, I like that. The preservation. Yeah, that's very cool.

SPEAKER_04 1:23:51

Yeah, I think that might be about all I've got on the notes. I don't think I have anything else myself.

SPEAKER_01 1:23:58

I think we've covered so much because organically there are just so many things. And I think it's led to this like robust discussion of so much more than a movie, but almost like a cathartic experience going through it.

SPEAKER_00 1:24:22

Yeah, it's like a meditation on life and death. Yeah. It is on how to live a good life, I think, and die a good death.

SPEAKER_04 1:24:30

I loved this movie when I first saw it in theaters, and I love it more each time I watch it. It's it's very good.

SPEAKER_00 1:24:37

That was definitely my experience was the second watch. I was like, oh, this is even better. Me too.

SPEAKER_01 1:24:42

I found even more ways that it connected with the first one, like just because at first I didn't think I thought that there were connections, but it wasn't as much of a I I didn't feel as many as I did this time. And I think part of it is there were just so many people talking about how different it was, and I kind of got focused on that and really didn't think as much about the similarities because I was happy with the movie. I I didn't expect, I didn't go into this film thinking it was gonna be a recreation with a different storyline of the first one. Like I didn't think it was gonna be like that. I thought it would probably be something different. They've talked about doing this for so long that at one point it was gonna be 28 months later, but then it's been so much time they really couldn't do that, so they had to think about it a little bit differently. And to me, I looked at it like an a story within the universe of 28 days later, but later in time, but still very much in the vein with the clever, thoughtful way that it was presented. And so I was happy with the movie. I'm still, like I said, shocked it didn't get any Oscar love. But again, they only have a certain number of quota that they can give horror movies, so you know.

SPEAKER_00 1:26:16

I loved it. I loved it. Thank you for having me on.

SPEAKER_04 1:26:19

Yeah, thanks so much for for coming.

SPEAKER_01 1:26:21

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 1:26:21

Oh, it's great. It's great. Anytime, always a pleasure to be on.

SPEAKER_01 1:26:25

It's been too long since you were here last, so I feel like we need to do this more. Always happy to come back. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04 1:26:36

And there we have it there. The feedback phone is now going off, so we wrapped up stuff here, then I've got to go answer that to see what other people thought of their funny features. Alright, we do have a little bit of feedback this week, and thanks again to Lucy for coming on. Uh now she's ridden away back into the abyss somewhere, into the void of guests. They leave before feedback for some magical reason.

SPEAKER_01 1:27:04

Uh probably because we record feedback usually very late. Although she might have been able to make it because it would have been early for her. She might have been able to make it for this, but who knows? Yeah. It doesn't work out usually.

SPEAKER_04 1:27:20

But yeah. Thanks again for coming on. But yeah, we've got some uh feedback and some thoughts from you, the listeners here. So I will go ahead and take this first one coming from Harrison. Says the newest one is my favorite of the whole series. Assuming you'll get to that one. And uh as I kind of hinted at him on Facebook, um, maybe sooner than you think, but we'll get to that later. Uh yes.

SPEAKER_01 1:27:46

Connor responded with, Hell yeah, I've missed my favorite show. Aww, thank you. Gotta say, the cinematography is my favorite part of this movie. Jody Comer delivered a masterful. Performance. When I first watched this, that ending took me by surprise. But now watching this, knowing what comes next, I think it's perfect.

SPEAKER_04 1:28:09

Yes.

SPEAKER_01 1:28:10

Agreed.

SPEAKER_04 1:28:11

Yeah. So thanks to y'all for that uh feedback on this movie. But we also do have some feedback from Tony coming in for the last season. A little, you know, look back on the look back and the ruffle awards. We did get to hear from her about some favorites. So she says, I always miss out on getting my feedback on time, but that's okay. It is. It's very okay. We got you. I still want to send my favorite moments listening to Run for Your Lives. I loved your bloopers episode and the Getting to Know Us episode. So nice to hear about you both. I really enjoyed that. Which, awesome. I do love to hear that because I always wonder if if people enjoy those as much, because it's like, yeah, it feels like a cop-out. They're not talking about a movie because I just want an easy week. But I I I I appreciate that, like, at least we have one listener who it likes to hear those from time to time, so maybe we'll keep doing them um sporadically. I don't know, we'll see.

SPEAKER_02 1:29:00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04 1:29:02

Uh she goes on to say though, uh, my favorite monster was The Monster in Frankenstein. What an incredible movie. Black Phone 2, I really enjoyed. I just watched it for a second time last night and appreciated it even more. K-pop Demon Hunters was such a fun movie and an unexpected surprise. Bring Her Back, in my opinion, was the most disturbing movie you covered. That one is eek, but it had some real themes of loss, love, and trauma that you both covered in your discussion. Piranha was so nostalgic for me and so much fun. I still have to watch Lost Bus, but it is on my list. Thanks for all that you do. Your hard work isn't lost on me. Anyway, I love you guys. Have a nice break. Here is to the next season. And we did have a nice break, and here is the next season.

SPEAKER_01 1:29:43

Here to it.

SPEAKER_04 1:29:44

Yes. Thank you very much, Tony.

SPEAKER_01 1:29:47

Yeah, thanks for being patient with us. I know this was longer than our usual breaks, but I think we're coming back better than ever and ready to bring you some great things to listen to and great movies to watch in this upcoming season. If you want to leave us feedback, we mentioned before Podcastica Discord is getting active, so you can join us there. We pop in from time to time. And so if you have comments or want to talk about something, I usually check it a couple of times a week to see what's happening. So you can do that. But if you'd like to submit your feedback the regular way, you can find us on Facebook and Instagram at Run for Your Lives Podcast, or you can email us at RunFoyourlizespodcast at gmail.com. If you're enjoying the show, tell your friends. We're available on all podcast players, including Apple, Spotify, and YouTube. Go to RunFear Lives Podcast.com for all the links that you're ever going to need. And give us a review on Apple Podcasts. That is the best way to share the love and get us out there even more. We really appreciate it.

SPEAKER_04 1:30:58

Absolutely. We do appreciate it a lot. And of course, speaking of sharing the love, now I gotta give those shout-outs to what's going on in the Podcastica universe around us and beyond. Been a while since I've said that. But yeah, a lot of great stuff on Podcastica right now for you to check out. Of course, the Walking Dead cast still has the Walking Dead rewatch going on. Jason, Lucy, and Claire together this week. Season six, episode ten, is the newest one for you to check out over there on the Rewatch. So they're still trucking along over there. A lot of things have been going on since we were gone, but we'll jump you right back into it. Of course, the Handmaid's Tale podcast has been going strong with testaments coverage. And Daphne can tell you all about that as she has been doing that, covering those episodes, and some feedback, super size feedback episode this week as well. And uh some big news on that show being renewed for season two, so you guys will have some more stuff to cover in the future as well.

SPEAKER_01 1:31:50

I'm so excited. I think Bruce Miller and his team knocked it out of the park with this one. I know not everyone agrees, but the writings have been really good. The rankings on Hulu have been really solid, and the cast has been incredible. The way that they they the girls they chose for each of the roles, it's just been so intriguing, terrifying, disturbing. All the things that come with anything connected with the Handmaid's Tale. Um, yeah, and it is renewed for season two. Me, Jason, and Wendy have been going all season. We just dropped episode nine. The finale's coming out on Wednesday. Our episode will come out after. We did release a nearly three-hour feedback episode that covers like feedback from three episodes because we had screeners, and so we're trying to drop episodes the day that the episode drops on the platform. And so, in order to do that, we had to use this strategy. It's worked for us in the past, and our listeners seem to like it. So, yeah, it's been a lot of fun to talk about this show, and I can't believe that it's gonna be over. And now we're coming back with Run for Your Lives at like all at the same time.

SPEAKER_04 1:33:18

You're not allowed to not have something to do. We gotta make sure you're busy with something constantly. You're not allowed to stop.

SPEAKER_02 1:33:27

Nope, not allowed to stop.

SPEAKER_04 1:33:30

Yes, definitely check that out. And of course, Wax Episodic is continuing on with Severance coverage, going back over the seasons that have been out for people to watch, kind of watching those and checking them out. So they're in season two right now with episode four. Jason and Karen have been doing that coverage there. So if you're a Severance fan or need a good excuse to finally get around to watching it, Wax Episodics have been doing that coverage there of the seasons, so check that out. Also, What is From is the podcast, and From is the show. Uh that's what it is. Uh and yeah, From is back right now with season four, and so there is coverage for you to check out. Uh it's in a different format right now. Lizzie's kind of running the show solo right now, but she's doing live YouTube episodes uh or you know, videos over their streams each week to discuss the episodes and talk about them after they air.

SPEAKER_01 1:34:18

Yeah, Pegan, Jason's also releasing the episodes as a podcast on Podcastica. So they can listen to them in their feed like they always would. And I I think the name of the YouTube channel is What is From.

SPEAKER_04 1:34:34

And of course, the podcast feed itself still has those live discussion episodes in quotes up, so you can definitely check that out if you want to hear some more of Lizzie's thoughts on this uh really great season of From as well.

SPEAKER_01 1:34:46

Yeah. I'm bummed that they're not gonna drop a new episode this weekend, because now I'm like dying to know what happens after episode five.

SPEAKER_04 1:34:55

So uh check that out as well if you're watching that show, which you should be. Um Still Slaying uh has got some uh fun. Of course, they've that is the podcast for all you Buffy fans out there covering all kinds of episodes of Buffy and Angel in that universe. However, they're uh stepping a little adjacent, sticking with the vampire theme a little bit, but uh this week you can check out uh Jason and Rinaldi over there with Penny to discuss Blade. So still get some vampire goodness over there on the Still Slang podcast, so check that out as well. Some blade coverage. Um then outside of Podcastica, of course, we have our good friends at Pirate Core Entertainment Podcast Network. A lot of fun stuff over there that they work on. Kaijucast, um, all the Godzilla universe and monsterverse stuff around there. Uh Mark and Dimitri wrapped up their coverage of season two of Monarch recently, so you can check out all their coverage of that season. Uh yeah, definitely want to check that out because you know, when we've done Godzilla stuff on here, Mark is always our go-to guest for a reason. He knows what he's talking about.

SPEAKER_02 1:36:01

Absolutely.

SPEAKER_04 1:36:02

And then if you haven't met or heard Dimitri, he knows exactly so much as much.

SPEAKER_01 1:36:07

So you've got to check this out. I feel like the next time we do a Godzilla film, we're gonna have to bring in both of them.

SPEAKER_03 1:36:15

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 1:36:16

Although the podcast may end up being four or five hours. So I don't know. We'll have to. I'm not taking notes.

SPEAKER_04 1:36:22

I'm just gonna sit here, you'll hear me go, cool, yeah, and let them talk the whole episode.

SPEAKER_01 1:36:27

Uh exactly. That may be what happens. Hey, if we need an easier week, that's what we'll do.

SPEAKER_04 1:36:33

There you go. So, yeah, so definitely check that out, especially if you're like a big kaiju fan, because both of both of them know so much, and it they're great to listen to. Also on the What's On Tonight podcast, uh, Becky and Mandy, of course, did all of their great coverage of the pit, finished that up while we were on our little break, and a lot of good stuff there for you to check out, so definitely make sure to check out their coverage. Because not only they covered the episodes, but they've been getting a lot of really great interviews and stuff over there. So, some of them that you can definitely check out is uh Leslie Boone, who portrayed Lena Hanzo in one and two, both seasons of The Pit, so you can go check out an interview with there. Uh Will Garolla, who is Orlando Diaz. Um he's uh a father and husband living with diabetes, then season two, so you can go check out that. If you remember that character or anything, so then definitely check out that interview. And then also Kevin Morgan, who is the uh parkour influencer, Vince Cole in season two. So pulling all kinds of really cool and then their backlog of interviews over there, some like great cast members, some like crew members, and like different people in different departments. They're just like all over the board with that. So if you're a big fan of The Pit, that is the podcast what's on tonight for you to go check out to even get interviews with like people involved in all aspects of that show. So it's yeah, incredible. Definitely go check that out.

SPEAKER_01 1:37:49

Yeah, they're crushing it over there.

SPEAKER_04 1:37:52

And then Adrenaline Cinema will be back soon also on the Pirate Corps Entertainment Network, uh, as they're gearing up to do some uh Vampire Lestat. It's in June. So uh be covering that one when it drops. So get ready for that. You know that there will be a home for uh coverage of that show right there on Adrenaline Cinema. And then on Panels to Pixels, uh Mark and Steve have wrapped up their coverage of Daredevil Born Again season two, so you can get the coverage of Daredevil. Man, what a what a season. What a show.

SPEAKER_01 1:38:25

So stoked for next season already, right?

SPEAKER_04 1:38:29

So good. Is there any confirmation on a season three?

SPEAKER_01 1:38:33

Yeah, the talk that I've seen is that they're bringing back Luke Cage.

SPEAKER_04 1:38:40

That's right, that's right, because yeah, that they're definitely led into some areas in that. So, yes, okay. Yeah, um definitely excited for that because I know also between the ending of Daredevil Born Again Season 2 and the Punisher kind of one-off um thing that was on there, one last kill, uh both of those are kind of tying into the new Spider-Man movie coming out soon. So there's also that to look forward to. There's timing of everything.

SPEAKER_01 1:39:08

And then I think we're getting season three after that. Um you know what? The Punisher, that one-off one hour movie was so good. Oh my gosh. We we're spoiled. We are definitely spoiled in the Marvel world right now.

SPEAKER_04 1:39:26

Loving it. Uh yeah, there's some big things coming up soon. Yeah, so yeah. If you're Marvel fans, stay tuned. And I'm sure Panels to Pixels will get on that. And then, besides then, of course, then I gotta throw over to our friends over at TV Podcast Industries because they will be covering all the Marvel goodies when they come out. I promise you that. So I'm sure we'll talk about that as well. Um, because they've also got Daredevil Born Again coverage over there you can check out. But then on the other side of superhero stuff, uh, the boys final season just wrapped. What a finale! That was oh my god. Um that show, uh, crazy. And so, yeah, the final season is covered as there, uh, over there as well at TV Podcast Industries. So they've got the coverage of all of that final season of the boys for you to check out as well. So do that, because they're great. Then if you want more of me and Daphne, of course, our other podcast, the Buffalo Buffalo Podcast, has still been going strong. We don't take any breaks over there. Uh no.

SPEAKER_01 1:40:25

You know, we have bare we have not missed a week of posting an episode since we started that podcast. It has posted every Monday, unless I forget, and posted at noon instead of 9 a.m. We have posted it like every week. It is so consistent.

SPEAKER_04 1:40:45

Yeah. Stay over there. Because it's it's fun. We get it together, we try to make each other laugh. We we succeed among me, Jeff, and Jerry, and then Daphne. Sometimes we succeed. Uh, we we try our damnedest. Uh do what we can. And if we can't make her laugh, then we just like make her frustrated and roll her eyes and sick of us. Whichever one we can get, we'll take.

SPEAKER_01 1:41:08

You know, I I do throw them a bone occasionally. When when they have really done well, I will respond by laughing.

SPEAKER_04 1:41:18

Yeah. But yeah, so if you want to check that out, a lot of great episodes for you to check out. But we just hit the milestone of the 100th episode, and so we do have some fun guests over there on that one, and it's the longest episode. Um, but yeah, we had a lot of fun with that one, so definitely check that out. But yeah, after all of that, you can finally be happy to hear next week we will be back. We'll continue on. We are here for the new season, so you'll get some more run for your lives goodness in your ears. Daphne, what are we doing next week?

SPEAKER_01 1:41:53

Well, when Dr. Kelson makes a discovery that could reshape humanity's future, this happens as Spike is learning that the infected are only part of the danger after he encounters the dangerous and charismatic Jimmy Crystal. We decided to go back to back, and we are covering Naya DeCosta's 2026 film, 28 Years Later, Bone Temple.

SPEAKER_04 1:42:20

Yes. So yeah, it's happening sooner than you think, Harrison, because next week we're just gonna Next week. Run them back to back, do them one and one after the other, and just jump into 28 years later. Go ahead and get them covered, get them done, because we're excited to talk about it. Uh, after covering this one, we're just like, we gotta keep going, we gotta get to it. So it'll be here for you next week to to continue on the series.

SPEAKER_01 1:42:44

And we are still hoping for a third movie. It seemed a little sketchy at first, but so the actor will play Spike, Al Fu Williams, posted a picture on his Instagram this week where he was ready to get back at it and had a picture of basically he was holding a bow. I feel like we're gonna get that third movie, and that would make me very, very happy because either that or he got cast in a young Robin Hood, the movie.

SPEAKER_04 1:43:13

So we'll we'll see.

SPEAKER_01 1:43:15

Uh yeah. It also could be some new uh Hunger Games adaptation that we don't know about. But I'm hoping that this means we're getting the third movie, and I know that's the one that everyone really wants. So but this one should not be overlooked because there's a lot about it that's special and wonderful, and we will talk about it next week on our episode. With that, we've reached the end of another season premier episode of Run for Your Lives. Thanks everyone for listening. I'm Daphne.

SPEAKER_04 1:43:52

And I'm Pate.

SPEAKER_01 1:43:54

And if you have to run, you better run for your lives.

SPEAKER_04 1:43:58

Hello, and bye bye.
